John Cena returns toWWE Monday Night RAW tonight for the first time since undergoing surgery in January. In his absence, Shane McMahon has ushered in the New Era, and Cena is sure to address the WWE Universe about the new faces on the WWE Roster. If he kicks off the show, he could also be the first person to address on WWE television the upcoming WWE Draft and brand split.

Ladder match.

WWE Money in the Bank 2016 is just three weeks away, so there's plenty of time to work Cena into the event.

Since the inaugural event in 2010, Cena has competed at everyMoney in the Bank. There are several ways he could be worked into this year's card, including the final open spot in the eponymous ladder match or competing for one of WWE's titles.

Money in the bank.

What follows is the first part ina series of Money in the Bank Historyarticles in which we take a look at a current or former WWE Superstar's history at MITBand what their past experiences might tell us about that same (or a similar) competitor atWWE MITB2016 on June 19.

MITB ladder matches

While winning aMoney in the Bank Ladder Match is generally a sure sign of a WWE Superstar getting a push to the main event, John Cena won his briefcase at 2012's event, long after he'd become oneof the biggest names in the company. Cena held the contract for just eight days before becoming the first person to cash in the MITB briefcase unsuccessfully.

At 2014's event, after Daniel Bryan had been stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship due to injury, Cena won another Ladder Match, beating out 7 of the WWE's top superstars to win the vacated title.

OtherMITBmatches

John Cena has competed atMoney in the Bank six times between 2010 and 2015, leaving him with a record of4-2. Although he lost in 2010 and 2011, he's currently on a 4-match winning streak, having gone undefeated atMITB since 2012.

Aside from the two aforementioned Ladder Matches, Cena also fought Sheamus in a Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship in 2010. His three other matches were singles matches, two for the top prize in WWE and then last year's epic non-title match with Kevin Owens.

Worthy competition

In his MITB contract ladder match, Cena got past Kane, Chris Jericho, Big Show and The Miz. When he won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, he defeated Kane, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus, Bray Wyatt and Cesaro in another ladder match.

In his four singles matches atMoney in the Bank. He lost matches to Sheamus and CM Punk in 2010 and 2011, then defeated Mark Henry (2013) and Kevin Owens (2015).

Most memorableMITB moment

WWE Money in the Bank 2011is highly-regarded as one of the best WWE PPV events of the last decade. The biggest reason was the result and aftermath of the main event, in which CM Punk took the WWE Championship from Cena and proceeded to "leave the company" with the belt.

However, his match against Kevin Owens last year was a follow-up to one of the biggest matches of 2015, as Cena got his receipt for putting KO over atWWE Elimination Chamber the month prior.

Predictions forWWE MITB2016

It's hard to imagine John Cena not getting booked forMoney in the Bank 2016 if he's back on television as early as tonight. Will he compete for the final MITB Ladder Match spot? Will he get inserted into the main event with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins? Or could he begin a feud with an otherwise unused wrestler like Bray Wyatt or United States Champion Rusev?

Whatever role Cena plays at this year'sMITB event, it seems likely that he'll come away victorious. It will be his first match at a special event since returning, and you can expect WWE to let the leader of the Cenation rise back to dominance.

WWE Money in the Bank2016airs live on the WWE Network on June 19.
