Madrid WTA Premier Mandatory event came to an end. In the final match Simona Halep, the last seeded player remained in the competition, put her strength to the test by facing the Slovakian star, namely Dominica Cibulkova, a former no. 10 WTA and Australian Open runner-up back in 2014. The clash put face to face two of the most powerful players in terms of hitting the balls within the WTA circuit. And this was seen all along the match -- some true gusts of forehand shots from both side of the net created a very intense match throughout.

The match

Halep`s pace was driven by playing strongly on her own service thus expecting the mistake to occur on heropponent's service game.

This approach paid off eventually. Halep overwhelmed Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Although the score does not show it, the match was much closer than that. Cibulkova tried to keep up with the hellish pace imposed by Simona. She managed to do so for a while, but it was not enough. The Romanian put in a surgical sharpness, especially in those key moments.

In the opening set, Halep broke on her opponent's service twice. The first time it happened in the opening game of the first set, thus allowing Halep to take a major psychological advantage. The former no. 2 WTA regrouped and took the first set in about 30 minutes. The second set began just like the first one. Cibulkova served firstand again lost on her own serve.

Next, Halep kept her pace and ended the match with a perfect service. An ace made her the new champion in Madrid.

The first title of 2016 and 5th place in the ranking

By winning in Madrid, Halep has surpassed her best performance on the Spanish clay court. Back in 2014, she lost the final playedagainst Maria Sharapovain the same venue.

Now Halep deserves all the spoils. Also, by taking advantage of the unexpected early exits of the high-ranked players, Simona Halep will climb two places in the rankings. Starting Monday, she will be No. 5 WTA. With this win, Halep is certainly gaining ground in the WTA ranking.
