The Premier Mandatory Tennis tournament in Madrid started with a strong and ruthless pace of play. WTA coverage showed that it produced a number of extremely interesting matches in the first round. Within the women's singles contest, some unexpected eliminations occurred.

Top-seeded players lost their matches

Many top-seeded players surprisingly lost their very first match. The list of victims made by the Spanish clay court includes widely known names: Angelique Kerber (3 WTA),Agnieszka Radwanska (2 WTA), andRoberta Vinci (8 WTA).

Only pretenders to the title Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep were able to overcome their opponents without much effort. Victoria Azarenka moved on after a clear victory in two sets against Laura Robson (6-4 6-2). Simona Halep, one of the most popular tennis players in the WTA circuit, did not give too many chances to her opponent. Japanese player, Misaki Doi was caught by two sets controlled almost entirely by Halep (6-0 6-3).

Few top players achieved victory.

Amongst the competitors for thetrophy, only Victoria Azarenka(5 WTA), Simona Halep (7 WTA) and Petra Kvitova,the defending champion and no. 6 WTA, were able to achieve within expectationsand overcome their opponents without much effort. Victoria Azarenka moved on after a clear victory in straight sets against Laura Robson,(6-4 6-2), while Petra Kvitova didn`t leave a single chance to her opponent Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino (77 WTA) by winningalso in straight sets 3-6 2-6.

Simona Halep had a convincingwin.

Simona Halep, one of the most popular tennis players in the WTA circuit, outplayed her opponent. The Japanese player Misaki Doi was quickly sent off at the end of two sets mostly controlled by Halep. The clash ended in less than an hour. The final scores were 6-0 6-3.The opening set was a display of strength and self-confidence from Simona. Misaki Doi was simply out-maneuvered.The second set was a little more balanced up to the point where Darren Cahill, Halep`s main coach, stepped up and gave some precious insights to Halep.

From that point, Simona Halep flew on the clay court eventually winning the set.

In the second round, Simona Halep, runner-upin Madrid back in 2014,will cross paths with Karin Knapp ( 75 WTA)who survived a three-set thriller in the first round.
