Roger Federer announced a few days ago that he would be attending the Masters Seriestournament in Madrid. With Federer on the main draw, thingswould have been downright interesting. According to the initial draw, in the quarterfinals, there would have been a possible meeting between Roger Federer and his well-known rival Rafael Nadal, if both players had retained their status and passed through the first rounds.

Some unexpected news

Today the totally unexpected news has altered the whole equation. According to ESPN, The Swiss Tennis player, a two-timechampion in Madrid back in 2009 and 2012, announced that he withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury.

It seems that the unfortunate event occurred during a training session. Roger hopes to recover in a few days and compete in the next tournament on clay in Rome as per the ATP calendar.

The knee injury started a domino effect.

The knee injury suffered at the end of January seems to have opened a path full of mishaps for the former ATP leader. Although he wanted to return in March in Miami, this was not possible because of a stomach virus. Basically, in the last three months, Roger Federer played in one tournament. This was the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters when he reached the quarterfinals. He lost the bitter match against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Although his current injury appears not to be serious, time spent out of the ATP circuit could create cause for concern.

It is well known that regardless of his value, a tennis player needs many matches to achieve peak performance. And Federer has big plans for this summer, especially for the Olympics.

What Federer`s withdrawal means

Regarding Federer`s unexpected withdrawal, the bottom half of the draw leaves two clear favorites in the route to the finals.

Rafael Nadal, athree-times winner back in 2010, 2013, 2014, and Andy Murray, the defending champion will potentially cross paths in the semifinals. There are also other players who can now hope for better results given the circumstances.
