The Indian Wells tournament is now halfway over, and this year’s edition has proven to be highly unpredictable. Many top seeded players in the women’s singles draws got eliminated in the first rounds of the Premier Mandatory tournament. Among the victims in the Californian desert competition are Angelique Kerber (WTA No. 2), Garbine Muguruza Blanco (WTA No. 3), Roberta Vinci (WTA No. 9), as well as other players currently ranking with the WTA top 20.

Simona Halep in an upward swing

The Romanian Tennis player currently holding the Indian Wells title seems to have accelerated to the pace that over the last few years made her rise to the top of WTA rankings. Although her opponents to date haven't been particularly very strong, from a moral point of view, it is beneficial for athletes to experience couple of victories in a row, and Halep needed reassurance; before Indian Wells, Simona Halep’s overall outcome in the 2016 WTA circuit was negative: three victories and four defeats.

Serena continues to destroy her opponents

On the other hand, the indisputable leader of the WTA ranking Serena Williams continues to make her opponents feel spinal chills. It is already well known that Williams simply smashes her opponents, as she usually does during the first matches of an important tournament.

These are the reasons why the encounter between Simona Halep and Serena Williams in the Indian Wells quarterfinals promises once more to be an epic one.

Serena somewhat frightens Halep

The two tennis players have, throughout recent years, delighted audiences with spectacular game play. However, Simona Halep owns just a single victory in seven attempts against Serena. In fact, there are two tennis players before whom Halep suffers from a genuine complex: Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova (whom she has yet to defeat). But considering Sharapova is currently suspended and we cannot know for sure when she will return to compete in the professional circuit, Serena is Halep’s major concern.

Moreover, Simona Halep has one more incentive to win: if she falls to Serena and is eliminated, she will lose several hundred points in the WTA ranking, which would certainly cost her one or two places in the rankings.
