Simona Halep stated that she was ready for the extremely busy period ahead of her. The next month is expected to be highly important for the Tennis players from Romania. The Indian Wells and then the Miami tournaments are important regarding the WTA ranking: last year Halep won the Indian Wells in a final against Jelena Jankovic, and in Miami she played in the final where she was defeated by Serena Williams.

Thus “the burden of the points” is a significant one: Halep has 1390 points to defend. The WTA system implies that tennis players have to match their performance from the previous year so that they can win points in the ranking.

Otherwise they lose points depending on the round where they are eliminated.

Meeting with Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi

Before reaching the South of California, the WTA No. 5 paused in Las Vegas where she met with her main coach Darren Cahill in order to discuss the last details before the beginning of the tournament. Moreover, Halep had the chance to discuss and get advice from two former great world tennis champions, namely Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi. Their achievements in world tennis are renowned and so Halep’s fans may hope that their idol received some good tips.

Simona Halep has a difficult quarter draw

The drawing of the lots for the main draw was somewhat ruthless. If she makes it past the first matches, Simona Halep may play against Venus Williams (who now returns to the tournament in California after a 15-year boycott) in the 4th round, and in the quarterfinals she may compete against Serena Williams.

In the 3rd round she may come across Ekaterina Makarova (former WTA top 10).

Despite the rather unlucky draw, Halep is more optimistic than ever. She stated that she didn’t feel pressured by the results in any way, and thus the most important thing is that she found her optimal pace of play and managed to overcome her health problems.

The intermediary result of 2016 is a dividing one for the former WTA No. 2. She has 3 victories and 5 defeats, the last 3 matches played having all been lost against some far worse ranked opponents.
