The WTA tournament in Miami delivered a new series of surprising results. The greatest one is definitely the upset suffered by Serena Williams(WTA No. 1) in the match against Svetlana Kuznetsova (WTA No. 19). Other players who long for the trophy have also been eliminated: Agnieszka Radwanska (WTA No.2) and Garbine Muguruza Blanco (WTA No.4).

A match gone wild

Serena’s match against Kuznetsova had an unpredictable evolution and the result was completely unexpected. In the opening set, despite the Russian player’s efforts, Serena Williams dominated 7-6 (7/3) in the tie break.

Things seemed to be on their normal path. However, something occurred in the second set. Kuznetsova, the former WTA No.2 and twice a Grand Slam winner, rapidly took the initiative and began playing more aggressively and quickly outran her opponent, incredibly winning the set 6-1.

The third set continued in the same direction, with the Russian player leading the match. The set lasted for only 33 minutes and Serena totally caved in.

Although she saved a match point, Williams was unable to prevent the outcome and Kuznetsova won the decisive set 6-2. Serena, the defenting champion at Key Biscayne, had no other option but to leave the tournament.

What’s ironic is that very final stood as a performance peak for both Serena and Halep – while for Serena it was her last trophy so far, for Simona Halep it was the last final in which she competed, at least until now.

Serena has since then played in two other WTA finals, the first one at the Australian Openwhere she lost to the German player Angelique Kerber, and the second one last week at Indian Wells where she lost to Victoria Azarenka as well.

In each of these finals, Serena was the favorite player, yet she couldn’t live up to the expectations.
