Serena Williams,35, overcame another obstacle in her effort to win another trophy at Indian Wells. The last time Serena won in California was back in 2001. Serena boycotted this tournament for 14 years because of the way fans had reacted to the final in 2001. At that point, Serena was supposed to compete in the semifinal against her older sister Venus, yet the latter withdrew because of health problems, as she stated.

The fans and the media made a series of accusations of match-fixing, which was the reason for the boycott. This year Venus also played in California after a 15-year break, stimulated by the warm welcome her sister Serena had experienced the previous year.

Serena outran Simona Halep in two sets 6-4 6-3 which she almost completely dominated. Although Simona Halep, WTA Number 5 and the current holder of the trophy, made efforts to maintain a high level of playing, Serena’s aggressiveness and focus during the key moments of the game turned the odds in herfavor.

Two more hurdles to the trophy

The following match is even more difficult for Serena. Her opponent in the semifinals is Agnieszka Radwanska, who defeated Petra Kritova 6-2 7-6 rather effortlessly. The Polish Tennis player is spectacularly regaining her physical shape. After she was no longer in WTA top 10 in the mid of last season, she seems to have reinvented herself. This was proven during the last tournament in 2015, the women's tennis Championship in Singapore, where Radwanska surprisingly won the trophy.

The last encounter between Serena and Radwanska took place in the Australian Open semifinals in January. Serena was once more a class above the Polish tennis player and qualified for the finals. She would then unexpectedly lose the final against the German player Angelique Kerber.

If she manages to get past Radwanska, Serena Williams may come across a more accessible player in the Indian Wells final.

The only player who is a real threat is Victoria Azarenka.

It would really be an impressive accomplishment for Serena to win again at Indian Wells. It would be the end of a 15-year time loop.
