Cardinals promising in pre-season

Coming off of their third consecutive National League Central Division Championship, the St. Louis Cardinals hope to improve on a season in which they lost the in the National League Division Series to the Chicago Cubs. As a part of MLB Spring Training's Grapefruit League in Florida, the Cards are off to a good start. A week into baseball's pre-season play, St. Louis has a record of 5-2 (including one non-league game), putting them 1.5 games behind first place Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals.

While the win-loss record may not ultimately be significant, players are competing for positions as the regular season approaches. An outstanding performance in a single preseason game could be just enough to send someone to St. Louis in April rather than the minors.

Their wins so far have come against the New York Mets, Minnesota Twins, two games against the Florida Marlins, and their non-league pre-season opener against the Florida Atlantic Owls.

Their losses came at the hands of the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals.

When looking at the cumulative stats for all of the MLB teams for either hitting or pitching, none of the Cardinals players stand out. Among the team, no one has pitched more than 4 innings. Seung Hwan Oh is the only Cardinal to have pitched at least two innings while maintaining a 0.00 WHIP. Sam Tuivailala has an impressive 5 strike outs in just 2 innings pitched.

Despite having a 9.00 ERA and his opposition hitting .444 after four innings, Luke Weaver is one of the four Cards pitchers to have been awarded a win.

Of the six players with more than 10 at bats for St. Louis, Carlos Peguero is on the hottest streak, batting .455 with an OPS (On Base Percentage + Slugging Percentage) of 1.227. Anthony Garcia is the only Cardinal to hit a homerun in the preseason and also leads the team in RBIs with 5.

Charlie Tilson has an incredible 4 stolen bases on just 5 at bats.

The Cardinals will pack seven more games into the next seven days, including two Split Squad games on Saturday and a day off on Tuesday. Opening Day for the St. Louis Cardinals this year will be in Pittsburgh on April 3rd against the Pirates. After a series in Atlanta with the Braves, the Cardinals host the season's first series at Busch Stadium against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning April 11th.
