Serena Williams will surely remain the best player ever in the history of women’s Tennis. Throughout her entire career, the tennis player who turns 35 in September delighted the audience with really magical moments on the tennis court, a superhuman strength and an outstanding force of character.

Aging seems to be Serena’s actual difficulty

Taking a brief look back, we notice that Serena Williams participated only in two tournaments from the WTA calendar over the past six months: the US Open in September 2015 where she was eliminated in the semifinals by Roberta Vinci and the Australian Open in January, where she unexpectedly lost the final to Angelique Kerber.

Her absence from the WTA circuit is due to many reasons: age is a significant element, maybe the most important one. At nearly 35 years old, many athletes usually just put an end to performance at its highest level. Let us not forget that Williams became again WTA No. 1 when she was 31 – an absolute record.

Another cause of her prolonged absence is the health-related aspect: throughout the best part of last season Serena played while being injured.

And all the sacrifice was so as to reach the absolute tennis record: the winning of the four Grand Slams in a single year. Her dream was shattered in the US Open semifinal against Roberta Vinci.

Serena’s retirement would blow up the WTA circuit

One thing is certain: there are very few tennis players who managed to successfully counter Serena’s cut-throat game over the last years. In the event of Serena’s retirement this season, the fans will enjoy a veritable show.

Why is that? Because at this point, except for Serena, the first 15-20 players from the WTA ranking are separated by just a few points: couple hundred points in the ranking may mean a leap of a several places to any player.

Moreover, the players currently in the WTA top 20 are either former Grand Slam winners, or winners of the important tournaments of the past years. It is certain that Serena’s potential retirement would break a psychological barrier: it would give all these players the hope that they may be the next No.

1 in the ranking.
