Bayern Munich advanced to the next round of the 2016 DFB-Pokal cup after beating thier rivals VfL Bochum 3-0 at the Ruhrstadion on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola’s side defeated second-division rivals thanks to two goals from Polish striker Robert Lewandowski and one from Thiago Alcantara.

The score should have been higher, but Thomas Muller missed a penalty in the last minutes of the game when Bochum were reduced to 10, after Dutch winger Arjen Robben was fouled in the penalty box.

Despite conceding three goals the hosts proved that they are agreat team, defending really well and making things difficult for Munich. In the next round, Bayern Munich will face one of their biggest rivals in the Bundesliga – Werder Bremen.

Bayern's domination

Gertjan Verbeek selected a strong starting team, featuring the biggest stars of the club: goalkeeper Manuel Riemann, left winger Jan Simunek and left back Timo Perthel.

Their opponents decided to mix star players with youngsters, selecting Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Xabi Alonso to play from the first minute.

Munich started the game strong, dominating the middle part of the pitch. Spanish midfielder Alonso sprayed perfect passes to his teammates regularly, but the Bavarians were having trouble putting the ball into the net.They finally took the lead in the39th minute, when Robert Lewandowski combined perfectly with Muller.

Donald Trump

The Polish striker fired a strong shotto open the scoring. It was his 28th goal of the season in all competitions andhisfifth in thelast four games. A few minutes later Bayern almost doubled their lead, but Muller missed the penalty. Despite the miss thereferee gave Simunek a red card for his foul.

Second half

Guardiola’s team started the second half dominating the wings, thanks to great plays from Douglas Costa and Arjen Robben.

In the 64th minute the Dutchman received the ball on the flank and delivered a perfect past to Thiago Alcantara, who finally doubled Bayern’s lead. They finished it off in the last minute, when Robert Lewandowski scored his second goal of the game.
