Johanna Konta is the first Tennis player in Great Britain who managed to qualify in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament since 1983 up until now, after defeating 6-4 6-1 Shuai Zhang (China) in two sets.

Konta (47th WTA) will play in the semifinals against Angelique Kerber (Germany), number 6 worldwide, who managed to defeat 6-3, 7-5 Victoria Azarenka (Belarus), seeded 14th and double winner of the Antipodes competition (2012 and 2013).

The British player succeeded in dominating the match against Shuai Zhang, the revelation of this year’s edition of the Melbourne competition, who eliminated the second favorite Simona Halep (Romania) in the first round.

Born in Sydney 24 years ago, Johanna Konta stood for a long time below 150th place in the WTA ranking before gaining her first significant achievement last year, when she made it to the quarterfinals at the US Open.

In Melbourne she eliminated the American player Venus Williams, seeded 8th and then she took advantage of a pretty favorable draw which gave her the chance to reach the semifinals.

Ever since then, Angelique Kerber (age 28), the winner of four WTA titles in 2015, hasn’t gone past the quarterfinals in the Australian Open, but she played in a semifinal at the US Open in 2011 and also in a semifinal in Wimbledon in 2012.

In the other women's semifinal in the Australian Open, Serena Williams (US), 1st worldwide, will play against Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland), the two players having been qualified ever since Tuesday.
