Lionel Messi led his team FC Barcelona to a 4-1 victory against their town rivals, Espanyol Barcelona. The Argentinian delivered a superb man-of-the-match display as Catalonians took the advantage in the first leg of Copa del Rey. The game was a great chance for Barca’s coach Luis Enrique to test his new players -- Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal -- as both of them made their first appearance for Barcelona since they arrived.

New players in the squad

Turan (who came to Barca from Atletico Madrid) started the game in the first team, but Vidal was just a substitute. Luis Enrique’s side were seeking revenge over their local rivals after the goal-less draw in La Liga on Saturday, but the fans at Camp Nou were left stunned when Espanyol took the lead thanks to a goal scored by Caicedo. SkySports reporters picked out right-back Dani Alves as the person to blame after the Brazilian gave the ball to Marco Asensio, who passed the ball to Caicedo for an easy finish.

The lead lasted only a few minutes as one of the best players in the world, Lionel Messi equalized after the beautiful through ball from the maestro Andres Iniesta. The Spaniard dribbled through three defenders and delivered a perfect pass to Messi, who took over from there.

Barcelona took the lead just before halftime, when Messi showed his genius once again with a perfectly executed free kick from 30 yards out.

The ball went to a top right corner, giving the keeper no chances to save it. Messi returned to the action after the break, assisting Pique for Barca’s third goal of the game. Iniesta played a great ball to right wing of the pitch and Lionel Messi cut into the box before passing the ball to the middle, where Pique was waiting to put the ball into an empty net.

Twenty minutes before the final whistle, Espanyol was forced to play only nine, as Gullon and Diop were both deservedly shown red cards after a heated exchange with Luis Suarez and Pique.

The game finished 4-1 for the hosts, as Neymar volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper in the 88th minute.
