The Philadelphia 76ers publicized the hiring of Jerry Colangelo today as the new the Managing General Partner special advisor and as the Chairman of Basketball Operations. Jerry Colangelo is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, as well as being on the Board of Directors as the USA Basketball’s chairman.

Josh Harris, 76ers co-managing owner, said that Jerry Colangelo is greatly respected in the world of basketball and that the team was very happy to be acquiring Colangelo’s 50 years’ worth of knowledge, associations, and experience.

Colangelo is also part of the program for the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team, as its managing director. As such, the team has been 75-1 since he arrived and has an impressive winning streak of 63 wins in a row that goes all the way back to 2006. It also received two Olympic gold medals, one in 2008 and one in 2012, as well as two FIBA World Cup gold medals, one in 2010 and one in 2014. That was the first ever time this had occurred.

Since 1968, Colangelo worked with the Phoenix Suns through 2012 in several roles, serving as its CEO and Chairman, as well as the Managing General Partner. He also served as their President, along with being in the Head Coach slot and as the General Manager.

He is said to have had a great influence on the NBA and served on the Board of Governors as its Chairman beginning in 2001 and all through 2005. He was also a member of the league’s Finance Committee, and at one point he was a member of their Long Range Planning Committee. Yet another thing he was a member of is the Expansion Committee, and a member of another committee for Competition and Rules.

He also played a part in getting women’s professional basketball to the US and served on the founding committee of the WNBA.

Colangelo excited about joining 76ers

The new advisor says he is very excited about getting a chance to work with Josh Harris and the ownership group and help in their continuing efforts to create something special and lasting with the 76ers.

He said that he believed there is potential for the team to have a very bright future.

Jerry Colangelo is married to wife, Joan, and the couple has four kids: Kathy Holcombe, Kristen Brubaker, Bryan, and Mandie Colangelo, as well as having 10 grandchildren.
