The Georgia Bulldogs are getting a new Bulldog coach to replace Mark Richt, who got fired this weekend after coaching the team for 15 seasons. The new Bulldog coach is to be Kirby Smart, the current defensive coordinator for Alabama. Smart had been in charge of the Crimson Tide defense since 2008.

Smart is also a previous safety and assistant coach for the Bulldogs, and he won’t become the new Bulldog coach until after the Crimson Tide plays Florida during the SEC championship game on Saturday in Atlanta. Smart is from Bainbridge and played Football there, as well as graduating from there in the 1990s.

Sources say others were considered for new Bulldog coach slot

Sources say that Georgia sports officials considered several other people for the job, such as Tom Herman of Houston. However, Smart seemed to be the favorite from the beginning of the new coach search and Herman didn’t even talk to them about doing the job. It will be Smart’s first job at being a head coach, but he has a successful career as an assistant coach.

Smart's wife, Mary Beth, previously played basketball in Georgia, as well as being part of the athletic department there. The couple has a vacation house near the school campus, so have many ties to the area. The officials at Georgia thought that Smart could help the team get more energy and get back into a course to win the championships in the future.

Smart winner of several awards

Smart has been the recipient of awards that helped him get the eye from Georgia officials to be their new coach. He became the Broyles Award winner in 2009. The Broyles Award is awarded to the country's top assistant coach, and three years later he received the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Smart will be 40-years old later this month, and in the last 8 years has supervised Alabama’s top defenses and is also a dedicated recruiter with many ties to recruiting all around the South. Now, he gets do the job he has dreamed of, that of being a head coach.

2 Alabama’s Crimson Tide during their championship game this weekend against No. 18 Florida Gators in Atlanta. He can’t sign an official contract until after that game. After signing, he will become the new Bulldog coach for Georgia.
