Ronda Rousey, 28, (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) – the undefeated UFC bantamweight champion – announced her seventh title defence against Holly Holm, 33, (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) – a former world champion boxer – in Las Vegas on January 2nd 2016. The 135-pound title fight will headline UFC 195 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Tickets for the event go on sale on Friday October 23rd. The event will also be aired on pay-per-view.

The surprising announcement was made on Friday (21st) on Good Morning America. Initially, it was thought that Rousey would be going face-to-face for the third time with Miesha Tate (17-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC). The UFC President Dana White himself had previously confirmed this.

During her announcement Rousey stated: January 2nd I’ll be fighting Holly Holm, who is actually the most decorated striker we have in all of Mixed Martial Arts. She is definitely my biggest challenge to date so I’m super excited about it.”

However, Rousey does not seem deterred by the multiple world boxing championships under Holm’s belt. When she was asked whether or not she would be able to defeat Holm, her reply was simple but confident, Of course, I can take anyone.

Holm herself has a vast amount of experience. Along with her nine undefeated MMA fights, she has also won 35 of her 41 pro-boxing and kickboxing bouts. Holm stated that she herself was surprised when she got the call about her upcoming fight with Rousey.

“It was definitely a surprise. I had already accepted a fight. I got a call Tuesday night from my manager.

He said he just got off the phone with UFC president Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, saying that fight was off and we were getting Ronda. So it was shocking because I was already committed to another fight. Fighting for the title was the last thing on my mind."

Mike Dolce, a weight-management coach for Rousey and many other UFC fighters responded to the backlash that Holm had received from many UFC fans. He stated:

“It’s a much more competitive fight than people would say. I see her [Holm] getting bashed on the Internet. Why do you bash this young lady? Because she’s worked her tail off to get where she’s at. She’s undefeated. She certainly deserves to be in the (title-picture) conversation. Now, to jump over Miesha for the title shot? That’s a conversation. I think Miesha deserved to be the number one contender or at least in that conversation. But having two cracks at Ronda already, I can see why Miesha was taken out of the equation and Holly was put in.”

Rousey’s last fight with Bethe Correia (MMA 6-0, UFC 3-1) lasted only 34 seconds, winning by knockout.

Many fans are wondering just how long this fight could possibly last now.

With regards to this, Rousey said no one is easy until after you beat them. "With Holly Holm, she’s the type that is ready to go 12 boxing rounds. She’s not the average chick that I would fight. She’s the best striker I’ve ever fought and striking is something I learned much later in my career. I don’t ever expect fights to be easy and fast.”

Undoubtedly, this will be the fight to watch. Two accomplished women in their profession are going head-to-head and it is unsure who will come out on top. Rousey seems to be the favorite but as the underdog, Holm may just have the edge.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Who do you think will take the title in January?
