disney confirmed that a reboot of “Pirates of the Caribbean” is on the cards and Johnny Depp does not find a place in the new scheme of things. The studio has roped in Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and expect them to impart a new look to the franchise. Depp had portrayed the role of Jack Sparrow, the pirate, in the five Movies released so far over the past 14 years and a change could be beneficial to the studio.

New Zealand Herald reports Disney took the decision to ax Johnny Depp in October, and there were plans to launch the sixth instalment without Depp.

However, the movie house is going in for a reboot because the Deadpool writers want to give a boost to the characters, especially that of Jack Sparrow.

The audience loved Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

Stuart Beattie was the original scriptwriter of the Pirates movies. In his opinion, Johnny Depp has livened up the character of Jack Sparrow and kids love him. He has portrayed the role five times in the five pirate movies so far. He dresses up in the outfit of a pirate when he goes to visit children in hospitals, and his fans will always remember him for that. Beattie came up with the idea of the pirates in 1993 and the first movie in the series took a full decade to materialize. The five movies released so far are “The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003), “Dead Man’s Chest” (2006), “At World’s End” (2007), “On Stranger Tides” (2011), and “Dead Men Tell no Tales” (2017).

Sean Bailey, the production chief of Disney, has admitted to a section of the media that the reboot is to infuse new energy and vitality. He feels the Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick can deliver the goods.

The last pirate movie failed to impress

According to Screen Rant, the last pirate movie “Dead Men Tell No Tales” turned out to be a disappointment at the box office. It did make profit but that was not up to expectations. The beginning of the pirate series was great with “The Curse of the Black Pearl” in 2003. It was a commercial success and Johnny Depp played the role of Jack Sparrow.

He was a supporting character in the original film, but took over as the lead role in subsequent movies. However, his personal life has had an effect on his career. There have been reports of scandals on the domestic front apart from unpleasant occurrences on the movie front. If he continues in the franchise, it might not be good for the commercial prospects of the film. Hence, Disney wants to play safe.
