Animes have over the last decade gained worldwide popularity and a solid fan following. Whatever genre or type of story you are interested in, there's sure to be an anime roughly around the same concept. With hundreds of mangas and animes to choose from it's hard to pick a favorite. Nevertheless, there are some stories that connect with you and pull you in. "One Piece" is one such anime.

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, "One Piece" was adapted into an Anime in 1998 and 1999 and is still an ongoing anime series. With more than 600 episodes, the show is one of the longest running animes in the world.

Welcome to the world of Pirates and Superhumans

Set in a fictional world that is going through an era of pirates, "One Piece" follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his escapades, adventures, and foolhardy conquests as he embarks on a journey to become the Pirate King. In Luffy's world, humans can gain supernatural abilities by eating a 'Devil Fruit'. The only catch is that you don't know what power you'll receive and whoever eats the 'Devil Fruit' cannot swim and loses all power in the water.

Luffy becomes a rubber human after accidentally eating a 'Devil Fruit'. Throughout the story we see, Luffy's indestructible resolve to become the Pirate King, no matter the consequences as he battles the World Navy and different pirate groups.

Luffy's crew, The Strawhat Pirates

As he sets out into the world, Luffy meets some of the most unique and eccentric characters who eventually join his crew. Unlike the other pirate groups that we see in the anime, Luffy's crew (The Strawhat Pirates) is extremely small and diversely talented.

His first crewmate and second-in-command is Roronoa Zorro (who aims to be the best swordsman in the world) who he frees from the clutches of the Navy. Soon after he gathers a very skilled navigator, cook, sniper, doctor, archaeologist, shipwright and musician and sets off on his journey to find the last island of the ocean (where the previous Pirate King has left all his riches).

Every character in the anime is extremely different and has their own quirk. For example, Zorro has a horrible sense of direction and always gets lost and Nami (the Navigator) is in love with money.

Luffy's unyielding spirit in the face of a difficult challenge and his drive to never give up make this anime my favorite. His character is so self-assured yet goofy and stupid that a viewer can't help but cheer for him.

From fast paced action and idiotic antics to elemental powers and a gripping storyline, this is one anime that got all you require to be entertained.
