The first trailer for the upcoming “Killing of a Sacred Deer” is deliberately vague. However, one thing is certain: Some unknown phenomenon targets the family.

Renowned Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, the person behind ”Dogtooth” and “The Lobster,” makes another award-winning entry. This time, he is trying his hands at the psychological horror lair genre. He also co-wrote the screenplay along with Efthymis Filippou. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” has won an award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It bagged the best screenplay along with Lynne Ramsay’s film.

Pay the price

Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman pioneered “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” film. This is also their second film together. They last appeared in “The Beguiled” just this year. Through this movie, veteran actress Nicole Kidman won the 70th Anniversary Prize at the recent 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Kidman plays as the wife of Farrell who is a heart surgeon and later befriends a disturbed teenager patient played by Barry Keoghan. The surgeon decided to adopt the teenager and bring him to his family.

The film trailer focused on the formation of the bond between the surgeon and the patient which would then result in a tragedy due to the odd behavior of the latter. As the teenager’s action grows more sinister, things are getting more different for the members of the Murphy family.

The first trailer of “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” didn’t reveal much, but Farrell’s and Kidman’s two kids are shown to be paralyzed from the waist down. A disease may have caused this or some deed related to Keoghan’s character. In the trailer, he was the only one shown to be undisturbed and was saying the lines “close to justice.” At one point, Kidman questioned herself as to why should she Pay The Price and why her children should have to pay the price.

Ambiguous but correspondingly sinister

Critics have classified the first trailer to be ambiguous but correspondingly sinister. The intense part which equated to horror was the crawling on the floor and down the stairs with their arms. Furthermore, the mystery and cryptic feel of the trailer intensified with the film’s official soundtrack which features Ellie Goulding’s “Burn.” Raffey Cassidy, who plays as the daughter of the Murphy family, sang the acapella version of the song throughout the trailer.

The movie trailer was first released last August 16, 2017. The indie studio, A24 is scheduled to release other trailers and distribute the film in the USA. “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” is set to make its way to theaters on October 27, 2017.
