There will be big changes on “The Flash” once the fourth season gets going in October. Most have contemplated how Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) would be able to find his way out of the “Speed Force,” though there are plenty of other things to cover.

Above anything else, however, many may have overlooked one person – Iris West (Candice Patton). One of the reasons why Barry got entangled was because of that storyline which originally saw her being killed by the evil speed demon Savitar. It took H.R. Wells (Tom Cavanagh) to alter the script, quietly taking Iris’ place and eventually getting killed.

Tie it all up and it all rolls back to the love affair between Iris and Barry. Will it carry on once Barry returns to the real world? Seeing how the series goes, that should crop up at some point.

Giving up the star reporter dream

There is no telling when Barry will be back to rejoin the team. Wally West (Keiyan Lonsdale) fills in as the hero for Central City but there is obviously more vacancies to cover. Julian Albert (Tom Felton) will not be a regular anymore, meaning there is a big void in the brains of science from within. Caitlyn Snow (Danielle Panabaker) has, of course, become Killer Frost, leaving Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) to do most of the work.

To fast-track, the leader for Team Flash is also vacant, and if reports are true that Iris is quitting her dream of being a star reporter, season 4 will see her take on the lead role for the Star Labs team.

Iris did show in season 3 some credible decision-making. With her brother Wally now the hero for Central City, it does make sense for her to guide him. Iris may be a bit rough around the edges as far as the science side goes, but she does have sound judgment. Other than that, she should be fully aware of what to do and fend off the evil threats expected to rise next season.

New lease will affect romance with Barry

From there, it will be interesting how things shape up once Barry is back. Their romance will continue, though it remains unclear if that marriage will actually take place. Rather, Patton shared how Iris would struggle at first with Barry gone. But once he returns, both will be faced with communication issues – probably something most have seen in the past.

So, it seems tension will not just be limited to Team Flash but also the personal relationship between Barry and Iris. The question now is: How deep will this go, and what lies ahead for the lovebirds? “The Flash” returns for its fourth season this October on the CW.
