When one think of “Dragon Ball” the first thing that comes to mind is Goku. The character has been the official icon of the anime since he was introduced. In fact, that character is one of Japan’s Brand Ambassador for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic.

This lovable Super Saiyan portrays what the collective masses can relate with. He is known as a loving father, a good friend, and a fierce fighter who is willing to lay his own life to save others. His character is the ultimate hero fans have grown to love through the years and through numerous series, the latest of which is the “Dragon Ball Super.”

Gohan was supposed to be the lead hero

In one of his previous interview that was published in Wired and was included in the second Daizenshuu, anime creator and manga artist Akira Toriyama revealed that Goku’s character was not originally intended to be always the hero in the “Dragon Ball” series.

Toriyama added that he wanted Gohan to replace his father as the new hero of the series, however, it did not work well with the fans. He further said that the supposed to be successor was just not suited for the role. During the Cell Saga, however, there are obvious indicators scattered all over the episodes pointing to the character’s rising role.

Gohan was first introduced in ‘Dragon Ball Z” as Goku’s child who is always nagged by his mother about studying. When his father was killed, however, by Raditz, the child was trained by Piccolo. He was soon fighting for the earth against invading villains such as Vegeta, Frieza prior to Cell’s appearance in the series. As part Saiyan, the boy was always praised by older fighters about his fighting skills. Within him, lies a dormant power that when unleashed can be at par with that of his father.
