'Rogue One' opens overseas on Wednesday before hitting theaters across North America on Friday

According to the Film gurus, the Force is with "Rogue One" for an epic box office opening.

“The film is widely expected to score the second-best December debut of all-time behind last year's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," with a domestic opening of $135 million to $150 million for a global debut of $300 million to $350 million," suggests the Hollywood Reporter.

"Star Wars: Rogue One" will top a knockout year for Disney, on the tipping point of $7 billion in global ticket sales for 2016 – marking an industry record. Disney is remaining conservative on this title, despite all the hype, claiming they don’t expect "Rogue One" to match "Force Awakens," since it is a stand-alone film with a new story and new main characters. However, the new characters are certainly not new faces to the big screen.

The star-studded cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

'Rogue One' 101

In case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard about "Rogue One," or are like myself and just need a 101 on what exactly the film & characters are all about so you can somewhat intelligently contribute to the water cooler chatter, here is the official synopsis for the film:

"Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule."

Essentially, at the core of it all, the film is about "A New Hope," and in the current world we live in, I think that is something all of us can appreciate and engage with – space fans or not.

'Rogue One' box office battle

The only brave soul going up against "Rogue One" this weekend is New Line's and Warner Bros.' ensemble drama "Collateral Beauty." Starring Will Smith and with a trailer that had me teary-eyed, it has the potential to steal some share of viewers, especially with the young female audience, however, this particular weekend, date night may be dominated by the Rogues.
