Netflix's hit show "Sense8" will return sooner than the fans expected, as the company has just announced the release of a 2-hour special episode right in time for Christmas. "Sense8: A Christmas Special" will air on December 23, and the first images of the episode have already been shared.

"'Sense8' is centered around eight characters that live in different cities around the world who experience a violent vision, and soon find themselves mentally connected by this experience," says Netflix about the series, which premiered last year to great acclaim.

Created by The Wachowskis, whose credits include "The Matrix" trilogy, "Sense8" soon found a growing and devoted fan base all around the world. Now, Netflix has revealed that season 2 will premiere on May 5th, 2017, ending a long-running speculation about the highly successful show.

According to Netflix's press release, season 2 will pick up right where the first season left – a cliffhanger of sorts. Capheus (who will now be played by Toby Onwumere), Kala (Tina Desai), Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), Nomi (Jamie Clayton), Riley (Tuppence Middleton), Sun (Donna Bae), Will (Brian J.

Smith), and Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) will be physically and mentally united. Running from Whispers and forced to question their own identity, all of them will be fighting for survival, as well as trying to protect each other.

The reason why "Sense8" became so popular is that, in true Wachowskis fashion, it takes a while to understand what is going on. Netflix's model allows for such creative luxury, as the fans are able to binge-watch the entire season in one go and start right back, to pick up the pieces and complete the puzzle.

If "Sense8" had been released on a network, it would've been dependent on weekly ratings and the probability of having the audience coming back for such an exquisite show would be much lower. That's also why the first reviews of the show were negative or confused, as critics were only given a few episodes to work with.

Notoriously, "Sense8" dabbles in a very diverse environment and cast, including actor Jamie Clayton portraying a transgender woman way after transition – something we have rarely, if ever, seen on mainstream television.

Both the Christmas Special and season 2 will be available globally, in all 190 countries where Netflix operates.
