The Star rebels rolled in $29 million Thursday for Disney and Lucas Film’s first stand-alone "Star Wars" film. The film opens across North America today. Winning rave reviews and the best preview box office of the year, the film edged out "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Captain America: Civil War" who’s preview numbers brought in $ 27.7 million and $25 million, respectively.

'Rogue One' expected to break records at the box office

And more milestones are to come, as "Rogue One" will likely go down in the record books as the second-best December debut of all- time, just behind last year's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The film is expected to have a domestic opening of $135 million to $150 million, and a global debut of $300 million to $350 million, according to predictions.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, "Rogue One" takes place before the events in 1977’s "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope." It follows a group of rebels, headed by Felicity Jones' character, Jyn Erso. The band of warriors go through the trials and tribulations of the galaxy as they try to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule.

Rave reviews for 'Rogue One'

The Canadian Premiere was Wednesday night and several of my colleagues were lucky to nab tickets to the special screening.

Some of the initial reactions the following day were "It was amazing, amazing...and then the ending was SO amazing!" "LOVED it" and "I'm so glad my husband wanted to see this." Needless to say, the crowd was pleased. Surprisingly, the female fans were much more enthusiastic about the film than expected. Perhaps because the Star Men-iacs already knew they would love this one, but the film turned out to have something that pleasantly resonated really well with a female audience too.

After all, action is actually the favorite genre amongst both male and female movie-goers.

Up against 'Rogue One'

The only brave soldier up against "Rogue One" is New Line's drama "Collateral Beauty," starring Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Michael Pena and Naomie Harris. The film follows Smith's character, a man who loses his daughter and copes by writing letters to time, death and love -- and they reply.

It premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival on December 13, 2016. "Collateral Beauty" is expected to earn in the low to mid teens. Not bad in the Box Office galaxy battle.
