Christmas comes about a week early for Star Wars fans. But will they show up to the box office and receive their gift? Most movie experts say they will. Lucasfilm and Disney's newest Star Wars movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" hit theaters oversees on Wednesday. The film makes its blasting debut to the United States on Friday December 16. Disney has been trying to downplay expectations for the stand-alone film. The movie features a new plot and new main characters. Disney expects the film to gross anywhere from $120 million to $150 million domestically. On the global scale, studios predict the film to make $250 million to $300 million.

But according the The Hollywood Reporter, the studios are being modest.

'Rogue One' versus 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens': How do they compare in numbers?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is trying to play it safe with its expectations for "Rogue One". The studio previously stated it doesn't expect the same big crowds that came in for "The Force Awakens." Last December, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" made a whopping $529 million worldwide. Shattering records for the month of December. Disney expects a lower turn out for the newest film because of its new storyline and the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Some international audiences have already seen 'Rogue One'

On Wednesday, the newest Star Wars film hit theaters in several countries including France, Denmark, and Norway.

Countries like the U.K., Germany, Mexico and Hong Kong were treated to the movie on Thursday. On Friday, the movie debuts in the U.S., Japan, and Spain. Fans in China have to wait until early January.

One other new movie will compete with 'Rogue One' in box office sales

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will be shown in at least 4,100 theaters across North America.

But one other star-studded film will be opening up this weekend. "Collateral Beauty" stars Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Michael Pena and other heavy-hitters. Smith's character is struck by tragedy, and pens letters to love and death, and gets a surprising response.
