"The Voice" 2016 resumed last night on NBC as a whopping eight contestants were sent packing during the live playoffs, leaving just 12 to vie for the season 11 title. Did the right hopefuls advance, based on the iTunes results that emerged on the morning of Nov. 8, or did America and superstar coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys, and Miley Cyrus make some serious selection snafus?

'The Voice' 2016 iTunes charting results: The live playoffs

Although "The Voice" 2016 won't count iTunes votes until next week's top 12 performance show, a peek at the charts following the live playoffs can tell fans whether or not the contestants with the most commercial appeal advanced.

According to data culled from the iTunes chart at 10 AM Pacific the morning after the live show, the 20 covers presented last night ranked as noted below. (Note: a * denotes that the contestant advanced via the popular vote, while a ** indicates that the contestant entered the top 12 thanks to her or her coach's pick. No * indicates that the contestant did not advance.)

  • 27. *Billy Gilman, "Crying" (Team Adam)
  • 76. **Brendan Fletcher, "To Love Somebody" (Team Adam)

Strange picks advance to 'The Voice' 2016 top 12?

A quick glance at the "The Voice" iTunes charting results suggest that only one coach --Alicia Keys-- made a decision that didn't fall in line with music downloaders' apparent preferences.

Top Videos of the Day

After Cuevas and McDonald were chosen via the popular vote, Keys opted to save Sa'Rayah, whose cover ranked 285th, over Halverson, who outranked both Sa'Rayah and McDonald on iTunes. Elmore fared comparatively well with downloaders, but Team Adam enjoyed the best rankings overall, so Levine's decision to save Fletcher --who was one of just two hopefuls to crack the top 100-- made sense.

When "The Voice" 2016 continues next week on NBC, the remaining competitors will sing for votes --including iTunes votes, which lead to iTunes vote multipliers if their covers crack the top 10-- during the top 12 performance show.
