A Vaudevillian piano cover of Radiohead's hit song "Fake Plastic Trees" is beautifully acclimated into the western scenario of tonight's episode of "Westworld." The song includes the lyrics: "She looks like the real thing. She tastes like the real thing. My fake plastic love." A perfect song selection, really.

Focus on prostitute Maeve

The show's sixth episode "The Adversary" focuses on prostitute Maeve (Thandie Newton) as she further delves into the truth of her origin and purpose. She goes as far as deliberately being killed by an aggressive john so she can wake up during repair and get answers from timid lab technician Felix.

She inquires about the difference between him and her and he explains that she was 'built' rather than 'born.' In a beautifully disturbing sequence, he gives her a haunted house tour of the lab where hosts are created. She also watches a promotional video for Westworld which includes a shot of her and her daughter in a past program that has since been rewritten. Felix goes on to explain that every thought and action Maeve ever has was already part of her preexisting programming. He presents a screen containing her program that accurately predicts everything she will say.

Threats and cooperation

Belligerent lab tech Sylvester catches Felix talking to what he assumes is an inactive host and threatens to report him for inappropriate behavior. Maeve pulls a scalpel on the unsuspecting Sylvester and threatens him if he does not cooperate. The two techs present to her a layout of her characteristics on a 20-point scale. Traits include coordination, charm, empathy, and intelligence.

Maeve decides she wants a few adjustments made. The final shot shows her breathing heavily, overwhelmed by the drastic increase in her level of intelligence. 20 out of 20.

The episode gave a refreshing focus on a host other than Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) who did not even make an appearance tonight. Maeve, a strong character from the start (due to her programming), is breaking out of her loop and taking her storyline into her own hands.

She has awaken and wants to be more than her programming. She looks like the real thing. She tastes like the real thing.
