Biggest shake-up so far since Season 1 of 'Sense8'

Arguably the most talked about change between the first season and the upcoming second season of the Netflix original series "Sense8" has been the casting change of Capheus "Van Damme," the driver based in Nairobi, Kenya. While the role of Capheus was played by "The Maze Runner" actor Aml Ameen in the first season, relative newcomer Toby Onwumere has taken over the role.

In the first part of a series of articles examining the 8 main characters of the Netflix original series, we take a look at the character of Capheus, and where he left off last season, along with speculation and fan theory regarding where his storyline may develop.

'Sense8': Capheus and Silas Kabaka

When viewers last saw Capheus, he had just dismantled almost all of the "Super Power" (rival gang) with the help of his cluster, primarily thanks to Sun Bak. After saving the lives of Mob boss Silas Kabaka and the life of Kabaka's daughter, the mob boss is indebted to Capheus for his heroics. While Capheus is not one for violence and a life of crime, he has a decision to make: will he continue to work with Kabaka, or will he cut ties altogether?

Everything Capheus does, and every action that he takes is to ensure the well-being and safety of his mother (who suffers with AIDS). Capheus was tied to Kabaka because Kabaka was his point of contact to get the medication Capheus' mother needed to survive. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between these two men progresses next season.

Having said that, although Capheus hits the rival Super Power gang boss with his bus, viewers don't actually see the antagonist dead, so there is every possibility that the character (played by Lwanda Jawar) will return to seek revenge.

In an interview I did with Aml Ameen last year for Talk Nerdy With Us, Ameen talked about how Capheus' character could change if his mother was removed from the equation:

"I have that darkness in me, and I might find that darkness in me through the loss of my mother or someone trying to hurt her. We saw how much Capheus changed when his mother’s life was under threat. I love that, here’s this guy that’s got this kind of magical element to him, but when it comes to his mother, and a circumstance where his mother’s life is under threat, he’s courageous!"

"I would really love to explore what happens when the mother element is taken away from him, and how that changes you as a person.

What I love about what the Wachowski’s and J. Michael do, they don’t force feed you a quick story, it takes investment, so a lot of people, some of the critics were like: “Oh my gosh! What’s happening? I don’t get it!”

Capheus and Sun in 'Sense8'

While the relationship between Capheus and Sun Bak can best be described as platonic, these two do really hit it off in a meaningful way.

The pair are first brought together when Sun has to use her martial arts skills to save Capheus' life (on more than one occasion), however, through their connection and discussions as the 12 episode first season progresses, you definitely get the sense that they understand each other. While they don't get romantically involved -- nor does it look like they will -- there is certainly a special relationship strengthening between the pair.

While Season 2 of "Sense8" doesn't have an official release date at this time, filming is underway.
