After months of speculation in the press, Prince Harry has formally confirmed his relationship with actress Meghan Markle via a statement issues through Kensington Palace's official Twitter account and asked for the press to stop "abusing" both her and her family.

In the lengthy statement, Prince Harry slammed the press and social media users who have both harassed and verbally abused his new love. Markle is a star of the USA television network series "Suits." The two have been seeing each other for several months, with Markle indirectly confirming her relationship with the heir to the British throne on social media.

Markle most recently posted photos of herself on Instagram wearing a bracelet similar to that of Prince Harry and stating that she was enjoying a visit to England, Harry's native country.

The actress did not confirm she was with the prince at that time.

"He has never been comfortable with this, but he has tried to develop a thick skin about the level of media interest that comes with it,” said a statement from Kensington Palace regarding the royal's involvement with Markle.  “He has rarely taken formal action on the very regular publication of fictional stories that are written about him and he has worked hard to develop a professional relationship with the media, focused on his work and the issues he cares about.”

Prince Harry is actively involved with the Invictus Games, a sporting event for disabled war veterans. He most recently opened the 2016 games this past May in Orlando, Florida and was an active participant in the awarding of medals to those who won their events.

While Prince Harry is used to speculation about his romantic life in the press, his relationship with Markle has taken a more serious turn for Kensington Palace to become involved and release a statement.

Kensington Palace intervenes on Prince Harry's behalf

The statement continued to describe some stories so defamatory about both the prince and Markle that Kensington Palace had to take legal action to keep them out of the media.

Markle seems to be subjected to the same kind of harassment Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, endured during her early years of her relationship with his father Prince Charles back in the early 1980s. The primary difference between the private intrusions Princess Diana endured versus the type of shaming Markle is facing is the use of the internet to propagate lies and hurtful comments about the publicity-shy actress.

Prince Harry wants to "protect" Meghan Markle

A palace spokesperson also commented that Prince Harry has been concerned for his girlfriend’s safety and “is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.”

The handsome bachelor prince has previously been linked in serious relationships to both Cressida Bonas and Chelsy Davy. He is fifth in line to take over the royal throne.

"Suits" star Markle was previously married to Trevor Engelson.
