Alex O’Loughlin or not, “Hawaii Five-0” isn’t planning to throw in the towel anytime soon. Steve McGarrett is always up for a foot chase, a little parkour, or a grueling fisticuff with the baddie of the week. For O’Loughlin, however, playing everyone’s favorite former Navy SEAL is starting to take its toll. The actor recently expressed potential plans to leave the series, and his post-season 8 plans have fans worrying about the future of “Hawaii Five-0.”

Can ‘Hawaii Five-0’ survive without McGarrett?

The CBS series just celebrated its 150th episode, but the milestone hour came hand-in-hand with a concerning interview. Citing the physical demands of the job, the Australian star isn’t sure he’ll make it past season 8.

“I’m all f—ked up, man. I mean I’ve blown both shoulders, one knee. I’ve had my elbow tendon reattached. I’ve got bulging discs in my neck and my back,” O’Loughlin told TVLine. “That’s one of the things I’m trying to figure out at the moment now; I don’t know how much longer I can do it.”

Should O’Loughlin feel the need to make an early exit, showrunner Peter Lenkov believes the drama could carry on.

“Of it comes to that, there's still life after that character,” Lenkov told TV Guide, citing the importance of Danno (Scott Cann), Chin (Daniel Dae Kim), and Kono (Grace Park). “But nobody's looking forward to that happening. We're all hoping he stays.”

For now, it’s a topic the actor and execs have yet to discuss. At this point in the season, everyone’s just focused on earning that season 8 renewal.
