Today, the long awaited trailer for "Beauty and the Beast" arrives, reports The Independent. Beauty and the Beast is one of Disney’s most beloved animated movies. The film was met with critical acclaim on release, and it is still highly regarded today as one of the best traditional animation movies ever made. It was even the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Next year, Disney is planning a live-action remake that will feature an all-star cast.

A timeless story…

"Beauty and the Beast" is based on a traditional fairy tale that was first written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, a French novelist. The best known version however is the abridged and rewritten version, published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. This version served as the basis for the critically acclaimed 1991 animated film, although certain liberties were taken in the transition from literary fiction to the cinematic medium.

The core story remained the same, with a handsome prince cursed to look like a hideous beast, until he redeems his selfish ways by having a kindhearted woman fall in love with him, despite his frightening appearance.

The animated movie was a massive hit, grossing $425 million at the box office, and received high praise from critics and moviegoers alike.

… is getting a few modern touches

Next year’s movie will be a live-action adaptation of the fairy tale, instead of an animated film. This is not the first time Disney has done a live-action remake of one of their classic animations, and it certainly won’t be the last either, as the legendary company plans to re-tell timeless stories for a new generation of moviegoers, this time using real actors and well known Hollywood talents to entice the younger generation.

Previous movies that have received this treatment include "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent," and this year’s "The Jungle Book."

Thus far we have only seen teasers and pictures of the cast acting their characters, but now the first official trailer has arrived on ABC’s "Good Morning America," and it looks absolutely gorgeous. The visual effects look very convincing, which should come as no surprise given that this is a big-budget production that aims to remake one of Disney most famous animated films.

The best part of the trailer is recognizing all the classic characters from the animated movie and seeing their live-action or computer-generated counterparts is a mesmerizing experience. The famous ballroom dance scene is also featured in the new trailer. The classic characters are all there, including Belle, The Beast, Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Gaston and many others. They will be portrayed by an ensemble cast of talented and well known actors, which include Emma Watson (Harry Potter series) and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as the lead characters, Belle and Beast, while Luke Evans (The Hobbit trilogy) will be playing the villainous Gaston.

The computer animated characters Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts will be voiced by Ewan McGregor (Star Wars prequel trilogy), Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Emma Thompson (Sense & Sensibility) respectively. Actors Kevin Kline, Josh Gad and Stanley Tucci also star in the new movie.

"Beauty and the Beast" will be released on March 17, 2017.
