When ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" 2016 returns tonight at 8 PM Eastern/Pacific, the top five pairs --and a quintet of talented guest dancers-- will take part in the season 23 semifinals. After the hopefuls have performed their individual and trio round routines, the lights will dim and "DWTS" hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews will deliver the dreaded results. So who's most likely to miss out on a trip to the finale?

Smooth sailing to the 'DWTS' 2016 finals?

Based solely on last week's ShowStoppers Night results, two couples --Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and singer Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko-- should advance to the "Dancing with the Stars" season 23 finals.

Both pairs came away from the Broadway-themed evening of competition with perfect, two-routine scores of 80, which handily out-paced the rest of the competition.

Of the two, however, Hernandez is the sole shoo-in: despite scoring consistently well with judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman, Kramer has three times been the final contestant called safe during an elimination. There's no guarantee that she was ever part of the dreaded bottom two, but her placement could well have been a "DWTS" production machination designed to encourage fans who want to insure her safety to vote.

Is she getting the votes or isn't she? "DWTS" results time tonight could well tell.

Will they or won't they?

Up until last week when they posted the lowest cumulative score of the pack --just 73 out of 80 points-- IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess appeared to rival Hernandez and Chmerkovskiy for favored status with the "Dancing with the Stars" 2016 judges. Even though they currently reside at the bottom of the leaderboard, they've still posted the second-highest number of points this season --Hernandez and Chmerkovskiy have a slim, two-point edge-- and in a right and fair world, will advance to the "DWTS" season 23 finals come results time.

The competition future is much less certain for the final two pairs in the mix, former NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold, and Reality TV star Terra Jole and Sasha Farber. Both earned total scores of 74 last week. They're also the two lowest-scoring couples left in the mix: Jole has earned the fewest of all with 335, while Johnson is a few paces ahead with 348. (For comparison's sake, Kramer has posted 350.) Although the final results will hinge on which fan base voted last week, you can probably expect Jole to exit stage left at night's end.

"Dancing with the Stars" 2016 continues tonight on ABC with the semifinals. Tune in to see who falls just a single week short of dancing for the glittering Mirrorball Trophy.
