Some of the best horror Movies in recent history have come out in 2016: “The Witch,” “Don’t Breathe,” “Green Room,” and many more. But like every year, not all of the horror movies that came out were gems; films like “The Forest” were panned by critics and fans alike. This list consists of only the best domestic horror movies that were released in 2016, and they are ranked based on the critics’ score that they received on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • “Viral”: Receiving a score of 60%, this film about a flesh-eating virus comes in at number 10 on the list.
  • “The Shallows”: Not since “Jaws” has a shark been so scary! “The Shallows” garnered a 77% rating.
  • “Lights Out”: In one of the creepiest horror movies of 2016, this ghost story got a 77% on the Tomatometer.
  • “Ouija: Origin of Evil”: Unlike its unsuccessful predecessor, this sequel was a smash-success receiving a score of 80%.
  • “The Conjuring 2”: With a rating of 80%, this was one of the most popular horror movies of 2016, and it comes in at number five on the list.
  • “Don’t Breathe”: This intense movie received a 87% by the critics, and it is likely to put viewers on the edge of their seat.
  • “10 Cloverfield Lane”: This J.J. Abrams tale is much different than “Cloverfield”; it plays out more like a horror film rather than a monster flick. This eerie story received a well-deserved score of 90%.
  • “The Witch”: Critics have described this as one of the most unnerving movies of all-time. This New England folktale garnered a 91% rating.
  • “Green Room”: If you ever wondered what it would be like to see Patrick Stewart as a skinhead Nazi, then the “Green Room” has the answer for you. The film got a 91% on the Tomatometer, and it is as original as it is suspenseful.
  • “Hush”: With a perfect score of 100%, “Hush” is considered one of the best horror movies of 2016. This terrifying tale was picked up by Netflix, and it is a well-told story of survival that is simply terrifying.
