freeform’s Shadowhunters aren’t known for pulling their punches, and season 2 will pack quite a wallop.

Clary Fray has been a demon hunter for exactly 19 days. Despite battling her way through one hell of a trial by fire, the teen has only scratched the surface of New York’s magical underground. With Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) desperate to reign in her daughter, Valentine (Alan Van Sprang) growing in power, and the Clave bent on taking down her brother, the young nephilim will be in for a wild ride this winter.

'Shadowhunters' Brings 'Huge' Surprises.

“Just know that there’s going to be a big surprise,” Alberto Rosende (Simon) told Nerdophiles at New York Comic Con. “Literally, that’s all I can say.”

Harry Shum, Jr. (Magnus) took this chance to elaborate on his cast mate’s teaser, but he quickly stopped himself for fear of slipping into spoiler territory.

“There are two HUGE surprises,” Shum said. “Huge surprises.

I’m worried I’m going to say too much.”

For those viewers who have delved into Cassandra Clare’s YA series, these surprises may seem fairly obvious. “Shadowhunters” penchant for pulling from all of Clare’s books, however, means that nothing is certain. The events of “City of Ashes” will undoubtedly be peppered with a dash of “City of Glass”, a pinch of “City of Fallen Angels,” and perhaps even a dollop of “City of Lost Souls.”

"Shadowhunters" Goes "Infinitely" Darker.

There is one thing we know for sure – there’s no way for “Shadowhunters” to avoid its dark future.

“It’s a lot darker this year, a lot darker,” Sherwood told The Workprint. “It’s giving us more freedom to play with elements of psyche and ability and consciousness that we wouldn’t have had the ability to deal with before.”

You can expect at least some of that darkness to flow from the discord produced by Jace’s (Dominic Sherwood) departure with Valentine.

“We can tease that everyone wants the same thing.

Everyone wants Jace back and for Valentine to be dead, but for different reasons,” Sherwood explained. “The Clave wants one thing, the team wants another. We can also kind of tease that relationships will be tested throughout this – everyone’s relationships are going to be tested and pushed throughout season 2.”
