"Shadowhunters" premiered in January on freeform, instantly becoming a quick favorite for the network. The show is based on Cassandra Clare's bestselling book series "The Mortal Instruments." The story follows Clary Fray as she learns her seemingly normal life is a lie. Her mother has lied to her since her childhood about everything, including who her real father is. With her best friend Simon, she discovers the Shadow World which is filled with Downworlders, and the Shadowhunters that fight against evil.

'Shadowhunters' showrunners and casting news

Earlier this summer Freeform announced that showrunner Ed Decter was leaving "Shadowhunters," citing creative differences as the cause. Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer of "Smallville" replaced Decter as the show's new executive producers and showrunners.

The casting news that caught attention was that of Aisha Wainwright who will be playing beloved character Maia from the book series. Maia is a werewolf, and a part of the pack led by Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) and who develops a connection to Simon (Alberto Rosende).

Recentspoilers for the new season

The NY comic con panel for "Shadowhunters" announced that Paul Wesley of "The Vampire Diaries" will be directing a future episode of the new season.

Other teases include sneak peeks and a trailer teasing what's to come in season 2.

Katherine McNamara (Clary) teased that the events of the new season will get worse for the characters before anything gets better and that fans can expect several tearjerker moments. Fans of the books can speculate what those moments may be. The new season will pick up where season 1 ended. The new showrunners have also teased that they'll be exploring more of the fan favorite relationship Malec, consisting of warlock Magnus and Shadowhunter Alec.

Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer are excited to explore the different worlds the two come from and to see how the two get to know each other.

Clary's journey for season 2 will be focused on her finding her place in the Shadow World. While we see Jace (Dominic Sherwood) after he left his family to be with Valentine and his evil crusade. The characters will be determined to find him and stop Valentine. The new season of "Shadowhunters" will pull from "City of Ashes," the second installment of the book series. Fans can expect the same blend of action, fantasy, humor, and heart that made season 1 a success.
