Bollywood has come of age and now films are being produced that are not run-of-the-mill films of a boy running after a girl and hiding behind a tree. The directors are tackling serious subjects and the latest release of the film "M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story," a film on the life of the Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a refreshing film that does not generate any controversy.

Cricket in India

Cricket is India's national game, a gift of the Raj to Indians. The British introduced the game to India and now it is the powerhouse of world cricket. Sixty percent of all revenue in the game is generated from India. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has captained the Indian team in all the 3 formats namely 20-20, limited overs, and Test Cricket.

Except for very limited success in Test Cricket, Dhoni is a runaway success in the other two formats and has led India to the world cup championship.

The film

The film is an unabashed paean on Dhoni starring the TV star Sushant Rajput. It relates the tale of Dhoni and his rise in the world of cricket. It brings out his personal struggle and victory against all odds faced by him. The film skirts some burning issues like his failure in the longer format of the game and his rivalry with the other senior players like Gautam Gambhir and Virendra Sehwag. In addition, the second half of the film changes focus and concentrates more on the love life of the Indian captain. The film does not bring out the failures of Dhoni and his surprise decision to resign as the Test Captain after a sound thrashing of the Indian team in test matches overseas in England and Australia.

Success of the film

The film released with over 3,000 prints and grossed over $2 million worldwide at the box office on its first day. This is the second biggest collection this year and the 3 Khans will have to be wary. Indian masses love their Cricket stars and this film panders to the mood of the Indian public. Sushant Rajput has gotten his big break and seized it with gusto. He puts in a great performance as Dhoni. The director Neeraj Pandey has done a deft job. The result is a hit and raking in the cash. The supporting cast is adequate with new girl Disha Patni as the lead's first girlfriend, making an impressive debut. However, a love song does look out of place in the movie. Despite its drawbacks, the film is immensely watchable.
