"The Birth of a Nation" released in theaters on Friday, October 7, 2016 has received mixed reviews. The film was advertised as based on the true story of Nat Turner. From studying black history, most people know that Turner was a preacher and leader of the 1831 slave rebellion in Virginia. Some critics say the story is not at all accurate. They admit there are sprinklings of some truth. People can't understand why Nat Parker included so much misinformation. Between the time the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January and its release in theaters around the world, it had received a lot of criticism. Comments were made about the title being the same as a 1915 KKK propaganda film.

Movie has inaccurate information

Nate Parker is the writer, director, producer and stars in "The Birth of a Nation." When the movie begins, Nat is a young boy played by Tony Espinosa who is raised on a plantation in Southampton County, Virginia. Parker takes over the role when the movie fast-forwards to Turner's adult years. The 36-year-old said he spent his own money on the film that took eight years to make. He said it was the most difficult thing he has ever done. He stepped away from his career as an Actor for two years to focus on the project.

"The Birth of a Nation" is said to be based on the true story of Nat Turner, but everything in the movie is not exactly true. Parker indicates that Turner killed his slave owner and a slave patroller. According to history, Turner led a revolt where people on both sides were killed, but Turner was not a murderer. The shootout in the movie never happened in Jerusalem, Virginia.
