The speculation and rumors, at least where casting is concerned, can finally come to an end. Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) has officially joined the cast  of the upcoming “Star Wars” anthology film centered around original trilogy character Han Solo as Lando Calrissian.

Donald Glover has been the frontrunner for months

Whether he was on the studio’s radar for months or not is unclear, but Glover, who is best known for his work on the sitcom “Community” these days, was rumored by fans to be up for the role since speculation arose that Lando Calrissian could even be in the film.

Unlike the fan campaigns for Glover to be the next Spider-Man for the upcoming Marvel and Sony movie, this rumor had a little more weight to it. Of course, Glover did get to film a smaller role for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as well.

The movie is set to star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, a role made famous by Harrison Ford in the original trilogy, and one he reprised for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Ehrenreich will play the character a little earlier in his life than audiences have seen him -- before he was well-known as a smuggler.

How Lando will play a role

Details of the film, beyond it being set early in Han’s smuggling career, are scarce. Rumors have ran the gamut from it centering on how Han Solo met his trusty right hand Chewbacca to how he acquired the Millennium Falcon. With Glover being cast, the latter seems more likely. Han Solo won his prized spaceship from Lando Calrissian.

The movie, according to LucasFilm, will not only see the early days of Han’s smuggling career, but also Lando’s experience in the criminal underworld.

He’s being termed a “scoundrel on the rise” by the production company.

About Glover’s casting in the film, directors Phil Lord and Chistopher Miller said in a statement, “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

The as-yet-untitled Han Solo anthology film will film in 2017 for a late 2018 release.

Before that, the first of the anthology films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” lands in theaters this December.
