Entering its final season, The Vampire Diaries begins season 8 with Damon and Enzo's disturbing behavior. The two vampires are affected by the mystery creature in the vault. However, the reason for Damon Salvatore's darkness might be a little more complicated than that. Executive producer Julie Plec spoke about Ian Somerhalder's character, Bonnie Bennett's (Kat Graham) storyline and more.

'The Vampire Diaries' new big bad

As TVD fans know, the primary theme in the upcoming season is saving Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey.) In the season finale, the characters were affected by a creepy mystery monster.

There is a lot of secrecy surrounding the details of the new villain, but viewers did receive clues. It is ancient, has strong opinions on how bad people should be punished and has some sort of supernatural powers. It can get inside the heads of others and knows dark secrets about the individual.

Damon Salvatore's darkness

This is where things get a bit confusing. In previous interviews, fans learned that Damon and Enzo are forced to do things by the creature. Somerhalder even teased an internal struggle.

However, TV Line reported that this darkness is different than the others. Instead of Damon enjoying the thrill of it, he is doing these things for a reason. Does that mean he is voluntarily killing dozens of people? Or is there a twist that will be revealed later on?

Steroline's relationship in 'TVD'

For fans worrying about Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline's (Candice King) relationship, it sounds like everything is going to be just fine.

Despite reports that Sybil wants Stefan Salvatore, Plec reveals that "Steroline" leans on each other.

Bonnie ready to give up on Damon?

In The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie tries to help Damon Salvatore through his situation. However, there comes a point when she doesn't know what to do anymore. The executive producer teased that losing her magic and the men in her life is overwhelming. Add to it that she can't seem to help Damon and she is ready to give up.

Notice that Plec said "ready," not that she does give up. That means there is still hope.

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW network on October 21.
