At this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards Tatiana Maslany, who stars on the hit sci-fi show “Orphan Black,” took home the trophy for Best Lead Actress in a Drama.

After missing out last year, she was awarded the Emmy and beat out other stars including Claire Danes, Robin Wright-Penn and Taraji P Henson. Maslany was previously nominated for a Golden Globe award and has picked up two Critic’s Choice Awards, three Canadian Screen Awards and was nominated at the SAG Awards as well

During her acceptance speech video, which is posted on Canadian news site CTV, she says that she “didn’t expect it at all” and that it’s “such an honour.”

Maslany hails from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada where she started acting at a young age.

She continued to guest-star in many TV shows before landing a break-out role in "Orphan Black."

In "Orphan Black", Maslany plays Sarah Manning, who, in the first season, finds out she is a clone and realizes there are many others like her. To add to the suspense, someone is plotting to kill them all. Throughout the following seasons, Sarah and her friends discover the true origin and conspiracy behind their creators. As the show progresses, viewers find out that there were two cloning projects called Project Leda and Project Castor.

The show is filmed entirely in Toronto and features many Canadian actors as recurring characters.

What makes this show truly unique? Maslany has played not one but a total of eleven characters, all of them with drastically different personalities. Most of the scenes involve her acting with different versions of herself.

 Meet the characters:

  • Sarah Manning is the lead character and is the first face we see in season one. She’s the tough one of the ‘Clone Club’ and she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty.
  • Elizabeth Childs dies in the very first episode of the series but her death sets up Sarah’s storyline and her finding out about her clone sisters.
  • Cosima Niehaus is a geneticist and the brains of the group. Cosima continues to research and find out more about the clones and how many more are out there.
  • Alison Hendrix is a family oriented clone that lives in the suburbs. When we first meet her she wasn’t as involved but donated her finances instead. She changes as the seasons go on.
  • Helena is the most interesting clone. She is the sister of Sarah but was raised in Ukraine instead after they got separated.
  • Rachel Duncan is cold, hard and un-feeling. The two original professors who started the clone project raised Rachel, who grew up never knowing anything different.
  • Krystal Goderitch is a manicurist and everyone continues to take advantage of her. As the seasons go by we find out there’s more to her than meets the eye.

"Orphan Black" keeps you coming back for more with its gripping storylines.
