Fans will remember that at the close of Grey’s Anatomy season 12, Jo (played by Camilla Luddington) turned down a marriage proposal from Alex (Justin Chambers). While Alex is naturally disappointed, Jo is unable to tell him exactly why she cannot wed him. The truth of the story is that she is already married and had escaped from an abusive relationship with her husband. Alex has misunderstood the situation and the season ended with the disappointed suitor attacking DeLuca (played by Giacomo Giannoti).

As we head into season 13, Alex will be facing the consequences of that attack and the situation with his relationship with Jo.

Grey's Anatomy and the background story

According to an interview between Entertainment Weekly and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, they hadn’t actually planned on doing a story on domestic violence. She said they just felt it was time to tell both Jo’s story and also the story of Alex, how he grew up and who he is trying to be. Basically it is the similarity between Alex and Jo’s backgrounds that attracted them to each other in the first place.

According to Justin, the pair has bonded over their past experiences. He said it was necessary to show her past, as it is a “pretty big piece of her puzzle” but he also said that his character, Alex, is going to feel very betrayed.

As season13 of Grey’s Anatomy continues, the storyline of the remaining, original characters will be put into more focus and we will learn more about Alex, Jo, Meredith (played by Ellen Pompeo), Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

According to Chambers, Meredith will continue to be the nucleus of the show, as she is its voice, but he said it is pretty amazing to have the four original characters still going strong after 13 seasons.

The domestic violence story has been a long time in the making, as fans may remember Jo having a fling with Jason Meyers, who ended up in hospital badly beaten after attacking her. Shonda said this backstory makes more sense once we know Jo’s history and she feels this is the right time to bring it up.

Jo's ex might turn up in Grey's Anatomy season 13

According to International Business Times, what will make the story even more problematic - and interesting for viewers - is that Jo’s husband is still out there somewhere. According to Rhimes, viewers might get to see him this upcoming season. Referring to Meredith’s violent attack last year on Grey’s Anatomy and how well she overcame it, Shonda finds it interesting to tell Jo’s story from the perspective of a woman who has walked away from her past and might be forced to face up to it again.

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy will get to see the premiere of season 13 on Thursday, September 22 at 8 p.m.

ET on ABC. Enjoy an extended promo of the upcoming season below.
