Heller is best known for his role as the groundbreaking manager of the rap group N.W.A. Although his role in bringing the rap group to the mainstream, Heller hasn't always been portrayed as one of the good guys. Instead, as N.W.A. rose to fame, many members of the group accused Jerry Heller of taking advantage of them and using them to get rich. Ice Cube and Dr. Dre have gone so far as to accuse Heller of stealing from them. Ice Cube ended up leaving the group in 1989 after fighting with Heller over contracts. The rapper-turned-actor sued Heller after he left over royalties that he believed he was due but had not been paid.

It was Jerry Heller, along with Eazy-E, who founded the original label that N.W.A.

performed under, Ruthless Records. Heller and Eazy-E worked together to recruit some of the biggest names in rap and would have been a force in the music industry until Suge Knight came along and took most of the good ones. It was the feud between Ruthless Records and Knight's Death Row Records that ended up splitting apart the popular Compton rap group.

When the N.W.A. biography "Straight Outta Compton" came out last year, Jerry Heller was furious over the way he was portrayed in the film. Heller filed a $110 Million defamation suit against producers of the film and it still hasn't been resolved.

It is unknown what will happen with the defamation suit now that Jerry Heller is deceased.

Jerry Heller, along with Eazy-E, is credited with the birth of West Coast rap due to his involvement with N.W.A. He also worked with artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Elton John, and many others.
