Disney has announced plans to adapt the Newbery Medal award-winning novel, “A Wrinkle in Time,” into a new film.

What is the story about?

The original science-fiction book, which was written by Madeleine L'Engle, tells the story of a young girl who employs an “interplanetary journey” to find her long-lost father, who is a scientist, with the help of a schoolmate and her younger brother.

On their quest, they are also aided by three immortal supernatural beings: Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit.

Over the years, the book had endured censorship due to allegations of it containing references to witchcraft and the occult. One issue in particular is the character of the "Happy Medium," a psychic character, who was said to terrify readers. Added to that, the aforementioned character of Mrs. Which, who takes the form of a traditional witch, an obvious pun on her name, was also a subject of controversy, of whom L'Engle has said was meant to simply be a wise-woman.

The storyline had previously been adapted into a Canadian television film, as can be seen below, which had also coincidentally been distributed by Disney. Reportedly, however, L'Engle had disliked it, even being quoted as saying, “I expected it to be bad, and it is.”

What will the upcoming Disney film be like?

Disney’s upcoming adaptation has an all-star cast for their take on the celestial characters. If the company has their way, Oprah Winfrey has been cast as Mrs.

Which, Reese Witherspoon will play Mrs. Whatsit, and Mindy Kaling will play Mrs. Who, according to recent sources. Reportedly, Winfrey had been confirmed to be cast for quite some time, whereas Witherspoon and Kaling are currently in negotiations.

Ava DuVernay is set to direct the upcoming picture, with Jennifer Lee, known for her work on Frozen, writing the script. Jim Whitaker and Catherine Hand will serve as producers. Tendo Nagenda and Jessica Virtue will serve as overseers for the studio.

Filming for the project is expected to start as early as November in Los Angeles.
