The first elimination on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" Season 23 took place on Tuesday, September 20. A lot of things happened on the elimination show before the actual elimination took place. The hosts, Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, built up the suspense until the very end of the show. Throughout the episode, they let the audience, viewers, and the couples know who were safe and who were in jeopardy. The rankings were based on a combination of the judges' scores and viewers' votes.

Couples safe and in jeopardy

It was no surprise that Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy were safe. This couple had been at the top of the leaderboard the two weeks the show has been back on the air.

The next couple called to be safe was Rick Perry and Emma Slater. Now, that was a surprise. Most people thought Rick and Emma would be the first couple eliminated because they had been at the bottom of the leaderboard both weeks. Marilu Henner and Derek Hough were told they were safe.

Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev were the first to be told they were in jeopardy. This was no surprise because they had received very low scores from the judges. Baby Face Edmonds and Allison Holker were safe. Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke were next to be told they were in jeopardy. Calvin Johnson and Lindsay Arnold, Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson, and James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess were told at once that they were safe. Jake Austin and Jenna Johnson were in jeopardy. Terra Jolé and Sasha Farber were safe.

Amber Rose and Maks Chmerkovskiy were in jeopardy. Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko were safe. Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke were in jeopardy.  After all 13 couples were told who were safe and in jeopardy, Bergeron announced that Jake Austin and Jenna Johnson were the ones eliminated.

Elimination process

It is too bad that Jake Austin and Jenna Johnson were the first to be eliminated. The 21-year-old who is the voice of "Go, Diego, Go!" said he was doing the show so people would stop thinking of him as a kid. During his final remarks, he said it was a good experience. Unfortunately, Jenna was dismissed so soon because this was her first season as a pro. Hopefully, she will be back next season when she can stay much longer.

Two returning champions, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Cheryl Burke, ended up in jeopardy along with their partners. Thankfully, they were not eliminated because they just returned to the show after having been absent for several seasons. People didn't expect Cheryl's partner Ryan Lochte to have gotten enough votes to keep him dancing another week, but he did. Tune in next week to see who will be eliminated next.
