'AHS' theme

The long-awaited theme on this season is finally revealed. No surprise for those that caught the clues from season 1 through the teaser trailers that the storyline for the season is the lost colony of Roanoke.

Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson), a medium in "American Horror Storyseason 1, talked about the lost colony. She explained that back in 1590 a total of 117 men, women, and children made up the colony and they all perished. The scene was so intense that fans wondered if the lost colony would be the theme for season 2.

The story of the lost colony is one that leaves more unanswered questions than answers. What is now known as North Carolina was home to the Colony of Roanoke, founded by Great Britain. Unfortunately, Great Britain didn't take care of the colonist's the way they should have and a full two years passed before they returned with supplies. Upon their return they found one set of skeletal remains and the word "Croatoan" carved into a post and the letters "CRO" carved into a tree.

Possibly that is the name of one of the nearby Indian tribes but that is not confirmed.

Some have speculated over the  years that when Great Britain's ship did finally return, they found the entire colony dead from starvation and shamefully covered it up. Others believe the colonist's may have joined the local tribes when food got scarce. Either way, there are no definitive answers for what happened to the 117 people that had been left there by Great Britain.

Story within a story

This season of "American Horror Story" is a story inside a story. As the characters tell the story, we see the same character played by a different actor playing it out for us. The name "My Roanoke Nightmare" tells us that we have joined Matt and Shelby in a twisted tale of angry spirits that inhabit the land their home is on. We are entering into the show's version of what happened hundreds of years ago to the settlers.

In season 1 Billie Dean Howard had also discussed the word "Croatoan." She explained it was used to get rid of unwanted spirits and to cleanse the area of lingering lost souls.

This season seems to all be coming full circle back to season 1.
