As the excitement continues to build over the Sony Pictures film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, the good news for fans is that first-look footage from the film will be debuted at the upcoming two-day EW Pop Fest entertainment festival to be held at the Reef in Los Angeles. The festival will be happening from October 29-30 and special guests from the cast of the movie will be there for the event, although no names have yet been mentioned.

Sneak peek at EW Pop Fest

According to Cinema Blend, the long-awaited Stephen King adaptation will star Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, the iconic gunslinger who is hot on the trail of Matthew McConaughey as the sinister “The Man in Black.” Filming has been ongoing for some time and locations included Cape Town, South Africa and more recently New York City.

It seems director Nikolaj Arcel now has enough footage to put together the first trailer for the EW Pop Fest. This makes a lot of sense, as Entertainment Weekly has recently been able to offer exclusive details of the movie project.

The story of The Dark Tower

The film The Dark Tower will tell the exciting tale of the last gunslinger, Roland Deschain, as he travels across a post-apocalyptic Mid-World, searching for the Dark Tower in order to save the whole time-space continuum in our universe and others which is currently under threat, as well as pursuing, and being pursued by, that evil sorcerer The Man in Black himself.

The movie adaptation has been a long time coming

As reported by Collider, many have tried to get this project moving before, without success, but finally this adaptation will not, in effect, accurately reflect the story told in the series of The Dark Tower books by Stephen King, but will act more as a sequel to the series.

Other stars in the upcoming movie are Kathryn Winnick (of Vikings fame), Abbey Lee Kershaw (last seen in Mad Max: Fury Road), Fran Kranz, Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Jackie Earle Haley and Tom Taylor. The film is set for release in theaters on January 13, 2017.

Besides the exciting news about The Dark Tower, several other program highlights are of interest at EW Pop Fest, including a 20th anniversary screening of the terrifying movie, Scream.
