Shannen Doherty has breast cancer, and she believes her dog, Bowie, was the first to sense she had the disease. Thinking back after her diagnosis with breast cancer, Doherty remembers that Bowie would sniff her exactly where the cancer was located.

The 45-year-old Beverly Hill, 90210 actress found out in March 2015, that she has breast cancer. Even though she has already completed three of eight rounds of chemotherapy, doctors have told her that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. Radiation is the next phase of the treatment.

Last May, Doherty had a single mastectomy. That's when she noticed a big difference in her dog's behavior. 

Doherty's dog, Bowie

Bowie was named after David Bowie, the late British singer, songwriter and actor who died at the age of 69 in January 2016.

Bowie was a popular music icon for over five decades. Doherty was a big fan of David Bowie.

The Charmed star says Bowie has always been protective of her. After her surgery, Bowie was even more protective. Bowie now spends more time with her than usual. The dog sniffs her entire body and focuses mostly on her right side.

Dogs have been known to detect diseases in their owners. Evidence has been found that dogs can sniff out diseases such as cancer and diabetes. They can even alert diabetics when their blood sugar is low. People say a dog is man's best friend. Doherty considers Bowie her best friend because of the attention he has been giving her during her battle with cancer.

Doherty has been married three times, but she has no children. Doctors told her she won't be able to have children now.

She has been married to her current husband Kurt Iswarienko, a photographer and film producer for five years. Doherty says her marriage was strong before she was diagnosed with cancer, but her marriage is now much stronger because of the love and support from her husband. She indicates that she doesn't think she could get through this major ordeal in her life without her husband who has been right there by her side like her dog, Bowie.
