With Netflix being one of the most popular video streaming sites, now coming out with its own original series, it's no surprise that the company has been broadening its business ventures. Netflix has teamed up with CBC to bring the new series titled Anne to life. CBC gave the show the green light, and Netflix will be streaming it around the world simultaneously as it will be aired on CBC-TV in Canada. The series will be released to Netflix Canada at a later date. The series will be premiering in 2017.

The original storyline

The book series by Lucy Maud Montgomery follows Anne Shirley, a teenager in the 1890s who is an orphan in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Anne is adopted by an elderly pair of siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert who wanted a boy to help maintain their farm Green Gables in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Throughout the series, Anne deals with coming of age, friendship, romance and other life lessons. Many have fallen in love with Anne's spunky personality, along with her loyal best friend Diana Berry and the dashing Gilbert Blythe. The series has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

Onto the screen

It is not the first time that the books have been adapted on screen. The most popular are the Kevin Sullivan productions. They included the 1980s made for TV movies starring Reign's Megan Follows and the late Jonathan Crombie, as well as an animated series that premiered in 2000.

The new series will be written by Emmy award winner Moira Walley-Beckett.
