What is ‘A Star is Born’ based on?

The film is currently believed to be a remake of the film of the same name released in 1937, which starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in the original leading roles. The premise concerns a budding romance between an up-and-coming ingénueof an actress and an already established, yet bitter and alcoholic, Hollywood star. The plot takes a turn as the ingénue’s career starts to build up as his starts to falter.

The film has had remakes before, most notably one released in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason in the leads, and again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. A trailer for the 1954 film can be seen below:

Unlike the original film, the remakes often turned the original drama into a musical, and the upcoming remake is expected to follow suit. That said, Gaga is expected to write and perform new songs for the upcoming remake.
