The Dancing with the Stars cast for Season 23 was revealed on Tuesday, August 30 on ABC's Good Morning America. It was surprising that several professional dancers are returning even though they said they wouldn't be back. Maksim Chmerkovskiy announced several days ago that he would return. Cheryl Burke is returning to the dance floor. Derek Hough is returning and his sister, Julianne Hough will be back at the judges' table. Some favorite pros are returning, and some favorite pros are not returning.

Former professional dancers returning

Maksim Chmerkovskiy retired from the reality show after winning Season 20 with Olympian ice skater Meryl Davis, but it seems like he couldn't stay away.

Maks will be partnered with Amber Rose. He will be competing against his brother, Valentin Chmerkovskiy and his partner, Olympian gold medal gymnast Laurie Hernandez.  Cheryl Burke is returning to be Ryan Lochte's partner.

The two-time champion left in 2014.

Derek Hough did not compete on the popular dance competition show last season. He is a six-time champion who is returning to try for his seventh Mirror Ball trophy. He posted on Instagram that his Broadway show, Singin' in the Rain, has been delayed. That freed him up for the time being to compete again on a show he loves. He is partnered with Marilu Henner who is known for having a sharp memory. Whatever routine Derek shows her, she is sure to remember it.

Allison Holker is back after staying out one season to have a baby. She is partnered with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. This is the 28-year-old dancer's fourth season. She has never won the championship. The highest she has come was during Season 20 when she and Riker Lynch placed second. Emma Slater was absent last season, but she is back and will be the partner of Republican politician Rick Perry. Julianne Hough, a two-time champion professional dancer, hasn't competed since Season 8.

She became the fourth judge in 2014 and is returning to the judge's table after being away for a couple of seasons. Gleb Savchenko is returning after three years. His partner is Jana Kramer.

Dancers not returning

Several of the favorite pros are not returning this season, and they certainly will be missed. Tony Dovolani announced on Instagram that he is departing from the show after 21 seasons. He wants to spend time with his family, focus on his Dance with Me USA studios and his students as well as work with the Tony Dovolani Foundation. He said he will also travel across the country. Tony was with the show for 21 seasons, and he never won. He is a fantastic dancer. He just hasn't been paired with good partners. Mark Ballas isn't returning after 18 seasons because he is busy singing and playing the guitar with his fiancée BC Jean.

After marrying Robert Herjavec Kym Johnson says she will not return. The husband and wife were dance partners on Season 21. Peta Murgatroyd, the fiancée of Maks Chmerkovskiy, is not returning because she is expecting a baby boy in January.

Keo Motsepe was on DWTS for the last four seasons, but he never came close to winning. No reason was stated why he is not returning. Dancing With The Stars Season 23 premieres in a two-hour special on Monday, September 12 on ABC.
